File Shares Between Ubuntu and OSX

Racking my brain trying to figure out why I couldn’t see any file shares on my Ubuntu box from my Macs. SMBFS is installed, and a folder was shared on the Ubuntu box, but the Mac simply refused to connect — something about bad username or password.

Too bad nothing in the documentation tells you that you have to create a Samba password on the Ubuntu server first. Go to a terminal then type:

smbpasswd -a username

where username is the name of the Linux user who needs to have Samba access. Enter a password when prompted then try to connect from your Mac again — using the password you just entered.

Presto.
