Change the Console Codepage in Ubuntu

If the fonts in your Ubuntu TTY don’t meet your expectations, you can tweak them with the console-setup app. First, make sure it’s installed:

apt-get install console-setup

Then use dpkg-reconfigure to run the config:

dpkg-reconfigure console-setup

Follow the prompts. Note that if you want a generic console like the one you get at POST time, you’ll probably want to choose UTF-8 for Encoding, “. Combined – Latin; Slavic Cyrillic; Greek” for supported characters, VGA for the face type, then any of the three choices for font sizes when prompted. Note that the size of the POST text is 16. Both 14 and 8 are easily readable and usable.
