When Your .223 Isn’t a 5.56 and Vice Versa

Saw this over at Guffaw:

The significant difference between the .223 Rem and 5.56 NATO lies in the rifles…

That’s not really surprising. .223 does not equal 5.56. And I do mean that in every sense of the word “equal”. If it’s stamped .223, then it isn’t stamped 5.56. Not so hard to understand.

Does that mean you can’t interchange them safely? In this case, not at all.

So, what’s the actual difference? Chamber? Tolerance to pressure? A plot by ammunition manufacturers to get you to buy the more expensive cartridge? No. No. No.

It’s the throat.

On a .223 Remington spec rifle, the leade [throat] will be 0.085”

And on a 5.56?

The leade in a 5.56 NATO spec rifle is 0.162”, or almost double the leade of the .223 rifle.

Oh, so what you’re saying is that there’s a difference of 5/64ths inch.

I wonder if perhaps there are concerns that after firing 15-25K rounds it might reveal some undue wear on the throat. I’m not at all concerned because the overriding factor is that the lining of the barrel is only good for about that many rounds anyway.

I’m going to keep shooting whichever of the two has the ballistics that I desire for the task at hand.

Though presently it seems the only thing that’s effectively limiting my range time and my desire to knock over aluminum cans from great distances regardless of caliber is the simple question of availability.

Guess I’ll need to spend some quality time with a muzzleloader instead.

Liberalism Is a Mental Disorder

You’ve probably seen the claim before that Liberalism has been loosely linked to mental disorders. Well, spotted in an article over at the normally very liberal Denver Post, Diana DeGette (D-CO — yeah, she’s in the next county over) said the following regarding why standard-capacity magazines should be banned in Colorado:

I will tell you these are ammunition, they’re bullets, so the people who have those now they’re going to shoot them, so if you ban them in the future, the number of these high capacity magazines is going to decrease dramatically over time because the bullets will have been shot and there won’t be any more available.

I really, for just a moment, thought that I must have just had a stroke because while I understood the words, it was nothing but meaningless gibberish.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: trying to understand liberal logic is like trying to smell the color nine.

Then again, now that I think about it a bit, I do find myself wondering if she’s mixing the liberal/socio-communist agendas and if, not having a clue herself how firearms work, maybe she’s confused about some marching orders she received from somewhere else on the fruit-loop food chain. In particular, I wonder if maybe she’s referring to this.

Interwebbing is Hard!

You wouldn’t know that I’ve been involved in technology in one way or another for the last 30+ years: I’ve just recently discovered the little Google Followers Stalkers gadget/widget for Blogger.

And what’s really depressing is that now that I’ve turned it on, it appears that I have gained, uh… let’s see here… one follower.

That’s funny right there.

So, for Eastern Iowa Firearms Training, thanks for the hat-tip. If I ever find myself out that way, there’s probably going to be a range day involved.

For everyone else, welcome to the random and mostly sanitized thoughts that rattle around in my head. Feel free to hit the Join This Site button in the righthand sidebar.

Also, as an aside, if I were to actually click that link myself, it would:

  • technically double my registered readership
  • be a bit like high-fiving myself in public; much the same way as Liking one’s own post on Facebook.

Yeah, I’m kinda strange that way.
